It’s a beautiful evening in the city — the trees are heavy with white blossoms and the light is soft and gauzy and tinged with pink. I pried my window open for the first time in five months and Oliver, my orange tabby cat, settled right into his usual place on the sill, pressing his big furry body against the screen and twitching at things unseen. It was a good day for both of us.

I’d spent most of the day at the hair salon, something I had not initially wanted to do on the first warm Saturday of the year. But I’d booked the appointment months ago for a Keratin treatment — a process that my friend Jessie swears by and which she’d somehow talked me into. It involves at least four hours of what — at best — is utterly tedious and — at worst — is hot and painful. Add in color and a cut and you’re there for a solid six hours.

But by the time I realized that I desperately wanted to cancel the appointment, it was too late. So I pulled myself out of bed, made a pot of coffee, fed Oliver, and thought about how I could salvage the situation. As I watched the coffee brew, I decided that the only way to save the day would be to use the time wisely. If I had to be stuck in a salon all day, then I would bring my laptop and work on the new idea I planned to pitch to my boss the following week.

After a quick shower — I didn’t bother to wash my hair — I faced my closet. Saturday mornings don’t usually inspire me to dress up, but it was the first warm day of the year and I decided to wear a sundress and sandals. The dress is simple, light blue cotton. But if you don’t pair it with jewelry, it’s too plain. So I slipped on one of my most fabulous new acquisitions — a big, multi-strand necklace with all different kinds and colors of beads. It’s a “look-at-me” necklace that does its job well.

When I walked into the salon, the receptionist’s eyes went straight to the necklace. In fact, instead of greeting me, she said, “Wow. Where’d you get that necklace?”

She looked me up in the appointment book and confirmed it: “Yep. You’re going to be here all day. Hope you brought your lunch.” Then she handed me a cape and added, “Better take off the necklace.”

I slipped the necklace into my bag, slipped myself into the cape and followed the receptionist into the salon. It was a relaxing kind of place, not too loud, more zen than trendy. The walls were coffee-colored and floors were hardwood. Like most salons, there were no windows to the outside world — a good place to concentrate on my work, I decided. Some kind of a low, meditative chanting with bells came from a hidden source.

“Green tea? Sparkling water with lime?” the receptionist asked as she pointed me to my chair. “We also have coffee, but no dairy. I can steam you some organic soy milk if you want.”

I shook my head. “Sparkling water would be great. With the lime, thanks.”

My stylist, a freckled, blond woman named Serena, started with my color — and I started on my project. My laptop had about two hours worth of battery time and I didn’t see a power outlet nearby, so I decided I better jump in right away. As she brushed the color onto my roots, she asked me a few questions (“Are you married?” and “Do you have a boyfriend?” and “Ever done online dating?”) and I was worried that she might talk to me for the next six hours and ruin my plans. But after the first five minutes, I think she caught on. I opened my manila folder on the marble counter in front of me and opened a spreadsheet and Power Point on my computer.

“You need to sit with this for about thirty-five more minutes,” Serena told me.

I nodded without looking up. Thirty-five minutes without interruption? Fabulous.

When she appeared silently behind me and put a hand to my hair, I jumped. “You’re stealthy,” I said.

“Just checking,” she told me. “You’re done. Follow me.”

Serena led me to the hair-washing room — up a few steps into a space like a tent. Draped fabric hung from the walls and the ceiling. The floor had a soft carpet that looked like moss. The sinks looked like they had been hewed from stone and the seats in front of them were soft and squishy. I settled in and leaned my head back, thoughts of my project running through my head.

I heard the water running behind me and I felt Serena’s fingers working through my hair — but in a vague way. Like something that smells good even though you’re not really aware of it. But then something registered — and I realized that this was an experience not to be missed: someone was massaging my head… why was I running numbers and projecting myself into next week’s work week? Was I crazy?

I took a deep breath and let all my thoughts drift away — save for one: be in the moment. The sound of the water running and the massage were suddenly the only things that mattered. When Serena walked me back to her station, I still had about an hour left of battery time on my laptop, but I shut the computer down and packed the manila folder away.

Five hours later, I was a different person. My hair was sleek and smooth and shiny. And I was completely relaxed. I’d enjoyed several cups of green tea, a bowl of steaming noodle soup and a foot massage. You could see it in my face — I looked great. Especially when I slipped my favorite necklace back on. In fact, I decided I’m a lot like that necklace: multi-stranded, colorful, sparkling and faceted… a collection of jewels, each unique and lovely on its own, that comes together to make something truly special.

I hadn’t missed a beautiful day at all.

My neighbor Jay told me something fascinating over a cup of coffee. We were sitting at the coffee shop just around the corner from our apartment building on a Saturday morning, sharing our Friday night escapades.
We hadn’t gone there together — just arrived at the same time and decided to sit for a bit. I’d ordered a grande latte and he was drinking just plain old black coffee (which made me wonder why either of us bothered coming here, where most of the beverages need at least five or six adjectives to describe them) and found a nice sunny table in the corner.

Jay is about ten years younger than I am and works in the IT department of a big investment bank. He’s one of those guys who graduated high school first in his class and finished college in three years and has no idea just how good looking he really is. His skin is smooth and his eyes are bright blue and he has perfect white teeth. And from the way his shirt moves against his body, you can tell he works out. If he weren’t so young, I’d have a big crush on him.

(Okay, I do have a big crush on him. But I’m not going to go there.)

He was wearing jeans and a navy blue t-shirt and he had most definitely showered before leaving his apartment. I, on the other hand, had rolled out of bed and thrown on a pair of sweat pants and a ratty sweatshirt that was lying across the bottom of my bed. Although I had brushed my teeth, I realized that I hadn’t brushed my hair and I self-consciously ran my fingers through it.

Jay smiled and his dimples popped out. “Nice necklace,” he said. “Goes really well with the outfit.”

“Oh,” I said. “I must’ve forgotten to take it off last night.”

The necklace is a beautiful piece — big gold roses with rhinestone centers. It looked great with the slinky black shirt I’d paired it with last night, but probably looked pretty silly now.

“Late night?” Jay asked.

I blushed. “Not what you think,” I told him. “I had a date with a guy who works for the Wrestling Channel. For three hours he talked about wrestling and didn’t ask me one question about myself.”

“You went out with a wrestler?”

“A producer,” I said. “Skinny bald guy. I listened to him and kept thinking how he was practically speaking a different language and I kept ordering more sake. You know how little those sake cups are? You don’t feel like you’re really drinking anything. But then I tried to stand up.”

Jay smirked. Adorable.

“Somehow I managed to lose him and find my way into a cab.” I took a sip of coffee. “I hate online dating.”
I looked over at Jay and noticed he was blushing.

“What?” I asked. “You, too, last night?”

“Not exactly,” he said, hiding his face in his hands. “It’s something different.”

My mind raced with possibilities — but Jay was so sweet and innocent that I dismissed most of them immediately.

“So?” I asked. “You can’t keep me in suspense like this.”

“Okay,” he said. “But it’s kind of embarrassing.” He scratched his head like he was trying to think of what to say. “I go to these classes. Dating classes.”

“Dating classes?” I asked, surprised. “What do you mean?”

“These guys,” he said. “They teach you how to talk to women. You know, how to meet them and ask them out.”

I was speechless — which doesn’t happen very often.

Jay squirmed. “You think it’s ridiculous,” he said.

“I think it’s surprising,” I told him. “I mean, look at you.”

There was a moment of silence and I think we were both blushing, but I was looking at the floor — had I really just said that — so I can’t be absolutely sure.

“So,” I said, looking up at his knees. “Instead of going on a date on a Friday night you go to a dating class with a bunch of guys where you learn about how to go on a date?”

“Well, Friday nights are kind of like a field trip. We go out to a bar with our mentor. Now that I’m saying this out loud,” he said. “It really does sound ridiculous.”

I nodded, then realized that he’d think I was agreeing. “No,” I told him. “It’s just that I don’t think you need a class. I mean, you’re a great guy.”

It was probably the wrong thing to say. Although maybe not. But it really made me think. A guy like Jay seems like the total package — smart, really good looking, fun to talk to. But I guess things truly aren’t always what they seem. Maybe when it comes to dating, we’re all just a bundle of insecurities, trying to prove our worthiness to a total stranger within the time it takes to drink a cocktail or eat a roll of sushi. For women, maybe it’s easier — we can put on high heels and fabulous jewelry and wear them like a shield, at least for the evening. But what about men? Can they adopt a look or a stance that serves the same purpose as a great necklace?

“So does it work?” I asked Jay. “The class?”

He shrugged and flashed me that fantastic smile. “I don’t know,” he said, holding my gaze a moment longer than necessary. “We’ll have to wait and see.”

Of course, I spent the rest of the afternoon analyzing that. And polishing my jewelry.

It’s officially spring by about five cold, rainy days — after a very cold, snowy winter. I’ve been sitting in front of my computer, listening to the rain rattle outside my window, and dreaming of Paris in the springtime. In these daydreams, I look a bit like Audrey Hepburn and I’m always wearing something fabulous — usually a smart little black sheath dress, black pumps, and a big statement necklace.

In reality, I’m at work, twenty stories above a noisy city street — a great city, yes. But not Paris. I’m wearing a dress, but it’s less dramatic than Audrey’s sheath, and my shoes aren’t quite as glamorous or as high. But my necklace — that’s a different story. It’s gorgeous. It’s made from black and white ribbon roses, pearls and rhinestones. When I wear this necklace, I feel like a different person. In fact, it’s the inspiration behind my daydreams of Paris.

I bought this necklace from Whimz Accessories a few weeks ago and wore it to work the next day. My boss, a woman I admit I’m slightly intimated by, kept staring at me — which made me very uncomfortable. Her name is Ellie and she’s French, which makes her that much more difficult to impress. I’m in awe of her, actually. She’s the reason I wanted this job in the first place. But the reality of Ellie doesn’t really match my fantasy of the mentor I’d hoped she’d be. In fact, Ellie has barely said more than three words at a time to me since I joined the company eight months ago. And usually those words are something like “hold the elevator” or “you’re late again” or “where’s that report?”

So when she pointed and said, “Wait a minute,” to me after wrapping up the morning meeting, I was more than just a little nervous.My colleagues silently left the conference room, several giving me backward glances. Ellie stayed in her seat at the head of the table and I wasn’t sure what to do. She tapped her pencil against a white notepad and stared. I gave her a nervous smile. Finally she opened her mouth, “That necklace,” she said.

My hand fluttered up to my neck. “This?” I asked.

She nodded. “It reminds me of something.”

I fingered the bottommost pearl and waited to find out what it reminded her of.
“Let’s have some coffee,” she said. And then she actually smiled at me and added, “and croissants.”

Over very strong French coffee served in bistro cups, and flaky, buttery croissants, Ellie told me about Paris — about her childhood and her teenage years — and about shopping. “This,” she said, gesturing toward the window, “is a fashionable city. Yet it’s still not Paris. But that,” she continued, pointing at my necklace, “looks like it came from Paris.”

I found myself wondering whether Ellie was truly intimidating or whether I’d been reading into it the whole time. She’s terribly stylish, good looking and smart. And she is my boss. Now that’s a combination that could sock a punch to any girl’s ego — even mine.

Ever since our little tete-a-tete, however, Ellie smiles every time we pass each other in the hall. She pops her head into my office some mornings just to admire my jewelry. And one day, I noticed her wearing a necklace that most definitely came from WhimZ.

Will Ellie turn out to be the mentor I’d hoped? I’m not sure… But now, at least, she knows we have something in common — a great sense of fashion and the confidence to show it off.
And… we’ll always have Paris.

History of Brooches
Adding pizzazz to everything from lapels to handbags, the brooch is a favorite accessory of fashionistas everywhere. Thought to have originated in the Early Bronze Age, and fashioned of wood and bone and later bronze embedded with gemstones, it was during the 9th and 10th centuries that brooches started being mass produced to serve the purpose of clothing fasteners. Early societies like the Scandinavian Vikings, Greek, Irish, Romans and others utilized brooches in their traditional dress. Women wore decorative and often elaborately designed brooches made of amber and glass beads to fasten their dresses, and prior to the Anglo-Norman invasion, men wore cloaks and mantels and brooches were used to secure them.

The Victorian Era seen an explosion of brooch design with insects, birds, and flowers becoming wildly popular as well as cameos and Celtic knots. The brooch had finally come of age as a powerful fashion statement, and it remains still today. Not for shrinking violets, the most inspiring contemporary costume pieces are big, bold, and colorful, sparkling with rhinestones and crystal or dripping in faux pearls and gemstones. Where once women wore brooches to keep their dresses closed at the waist or shoulder, today we wear brooches in a multitude of creative ways. For every day, brooches give that special ‘wow’ factor to the ‘v’ in the neckline of your crisp white or black shirt or dress. They also may be pinned onto fabric or leather bracelets and chokers. Years ago, as hostess for a fancy fundraising gala for The Friends of the Animals, I wore a gorgeous smiling cat’s face brooch pinned onto a wide black leather choker. It had rhinestone eyes and a jaunty little rhinestone bowtie that swayed back and forth as I moved. This chic cat brooch and the unusual way I wore it was the perfect finishing touch to my formal black suit and brought a smile of delight to everyone’s face. Brooches give expression to our sense of humor, love of nature and animals, and most of all our sense of style. I remember, many years ago, creating a report on a Designer in my undergraduate degree program, Fashion Merchandising. At first, it seemed to be a difficult task to select only one perfect Designer to write about. But then, it became obvious…..who has a classic brand that has stood the test of time without compromising its’ integrity? CoCo Chanel, one of the most influential fashion icons of the 20th Century. Gabrielle Bonheur "CoCo" Chanel inspired a generation by creating fashion that pursued an “expensive simplicity”. Chanel’s signature look has transformed to a modern replica of her earlier fashions. Chanel brings us tweed asymmetrical jackets with contrasting trim and pockets; men inspired suits; accented with layers of pearls, embellished classic jeweled brooches and ruffled collars.
